Environmental Policy
The Lakes Free Range Egg Co Ltd has written detailed environmental policy and a packing operation independently audited by Environwise to produce detailed plans allowing minimisation of environmental impact and energy usage.
All our farm producers have Bio-diversity Action Plans in place produced by the independent Charity FWAG (Farm Wildlife Advisory Group) with clear detailed plans on how to improve habitat on their farms for locally important plants, birds, mammals and insects. Coupled with this is it is a condition of supply to The Lakes Free Range Egg Co Ltd that all farms are members of the government run ELS (Entry Level Environmental Improvement Scheme).
The Environment
The Lakes Free Range Egg Co Ltd’s aim is to maximise its benefits to the environment and minimise its detrimental effects. This stretches from the highly insulated, natural stone built packing centre which aims to have zero GHG emissions, to much use of integrated transport planning etc to reduce food miles, to the more direct impact environmental improvement measures of tree planting. Membership of Government ELS schemes and Bio-diversity Action Plans.
We are the ONLY egg company in the country which require as a condition of supply that its farmers are ELS registered ( as a minimum), have a Bio-diversity Action Plan in place and plant trees, hedges or wildlife areas to improve the environment.
In conjunction with funding from “Friends of The Lake District” and using the planning skills of FWAG (Farm Wildlife Advisory Group) the company has funded and carried out the planting of 10’s of thousands of native species trees over the last 10 years.
We are proud of this as the natural tree cover allows what are naturally timid birds the security from predators and shade from sun and storm to roam much more freely than in open pasture.
